Volunteer Opportunities

As we approach the 2026 November midterm elections, there will be multiple ways that individual volunteers can help.

Registering Voters

  • You can become a “Deputy Voter Registrar” (DVR) by going to this Travis County site, where you will fill out a form with your information, watch a 20-minute training video, and then take a test
  • Organizers for the Blue Action Democrats and the League of Women Voters set up voter registration opportunities at various events and sites
  • If you become a DVR, let your precinct chair know, and he will put you in touch with the coordinator of voter registration for southwest Austin

Volunteering at the “Coordinated Campaign” office in south Austin

Each election cycle, the Travis County Democratic Party operates a Coordinated Campaign through one or more offices. At these offices, there is working space for some individual Democratic candidates, plus voters can obtain yard signs and and other materials and can participate in various volunteer tasks.

In 2026 there is a Coordinated Campaign office in south Austin, open seven days a week:

Location:  4005 Banister Lane,  Bldg. B (it says “Park Place” at the entrance to the driveway)
It’s just slightly north of Ben White Blvd. between South Lamar and South First

If you’d like to volunteer to do any work there, let your precinct chair know. Two possibilities:

  • Taco Tuesdays — phone banking to prospective voters, on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 PM
  • Take a two-hour shift each week to staff the reception desk up front

Knocking on Doors in our Precincts

Knocking on doors and talking face-to-face with neighbors is the GOLD STANDARD for effective GOTV efforts, along with contacting friends and neighbors by text (see below).

We have a summer canvassing operation and will subsequently have a fall operation:

Summer

This summer, we are knocking on doors of voters who do NOT vote in primaries, but are rated as at least 40 percent likely Democratic. We want to give them early information (a flyer) about the Democratic candidates. If we discover they are leaning Republican, we can remove them from “Get Out the Vote” lists in the fall (see #2 below).

Fall

When October arrives, we will prepare lists of likely Democrats in southwest Austin precincts whom we wish to target in a “Get Out the Vote” (GOTV) program.

For both operations, Blue Action Democrats can give you the tools to do this —  a simple mobile phone app that give each volunteer access to a list, with names and addresses (and even voting histories), and is interactive so that we can keep track of progress.

Texting Friends and Neighbors

We can assist you in drafting texts to send to people you know, or to folks in your neighborhood with whom you have a potential connection. This is called “relational organizing.”

Over time, I have established relationships with neighbors who appreciate being told about Early Voting, for instance, and providing them with a link to their sample ballot.

Writing Postcards

In the three previous election cycles, the Southwest Austin chapter of Blue Action Democrats implemented a postcard program Volunteers wrote personal messages on postcards that were then distributed door-to-door by hand.

As of July 2026, the chapter has not raised sufficient funds to print postcards. If this situation changes, this page will be updated.
